Biography

Anabela Romano is the leader of the Plant Biotechnology Lab (http://www.plantbiotechnologylab.pt) since 1995, the year she joined the faculty at the University of Algarve. Since then she has been conducting research on the use of biotechnological approaches towards the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources and on the biological and chemical characterization of natural compounds from plant origin.

She is actively engaged in training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and teaches graduate and undergraduate-level courses like Plant Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Natural Product Biotechnology, Plant Diversity, among others.

She has supervised several post-doc, PhD and master students. She is the principal investigator of several financed research projects and evaluator of national and international research projects and grants. She has published several original papers in refereed publications, book chapters and books and has been invited to present lectures at specialized national and international congresses and other scientific meetings.

Presently she is director of the degree in biotechnology, member of the coordination commission of Biotechnology MSc and of the PhD in Biotechnological Sciences; and is part of the scientific council of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology.

She is the director of the Center for Mediterranean Bioresources and Food (MeditBio – www.meditbio.pt), and she is the coordinator of the Plant Bio-Resources Group. From 2011 to 2013 she was Vice-Rector of the University of Algarve.
